A Mother’s Song of Surrender
I wrote this song many years ago for a play. At the time, it was simply a song I had written for a character—a mother learning to let go of her son and trust the path of his life.
Years later, after my son Cory passed away, I realized something I could never have known when I first wrote those words:
The song had been for me.
Cory was wild-hearted, funny, tender, mischievous, adventurous, and completely himself. From the time he was a little boy, there was something in him that belonged wholly to life. I could love him. I could walk beside him. But his life was always his own.
After Cory died, the meaning of surrender became something very different to me. I once thought letting go meant losing. I thought goodbye meant someone was gone. But grief—and Love—have taught me otherwise.
Love does not end where a life ends.
Over the years, this song continued to evolve with me, eventually becoming A Mother’s Song of Surrender.
This video is Cory’s story, told through photographs of the boy and man I had the extraordinary privilege of calling my son.
But I also offer it to every mother who has had to do the unimaginable: continue loving a child she can no longer physically hold.
May you remember that your love still has somewhere to go.
May you feel that the bond between you has not disappeared.
And may you discover, in your own way and in your own time, that surrender is not the end of Love.
It is trusting Love enough to know that it remains.
